The purpose of networking is to build and maintain a roster of professional contacts throughout your career.
Note that the best time to establish a network of contacts is before you have a need. People who are very outgoing and participate in community clubs and events probably already have a good network upon which to rely. If you are not a joiner, or are shy and introverted, it would be a good idea to start joining business clubs and associations and develop new friendships and contacts so that when you need help finding employment, starting a new business, etc., your network is already in place.
Also, remember that networking is reciprocal in nature -- sometimes it will be you who help others find help. Don't forget to send thank you notes to those who helped you network. |
